Quandong Black Opal, up close.
Shade varies between pieces of Quandong Black Opal, so a deep black wall shows shifting depth, like an opal turned in the hand. It is a gloss ceramic rectangle, 65 x 200 mm and 8.3 mm thick.
It suits a bathroom wall with pale timber and white fittings, or a feature wall under warm downlights. Lay it in a brick bond with a dark grout to keep the grid quiet under all that gloss. Made in Italy.
Specified properly.

Mapei Ultracolor Plus, for joints up to 20 mm.
Mapei makes no colour close to this glaze. This one sits nearest in depth, so the joint reads as a shadow line.

Laying notes
Half offset (running bond) is the classic. A one-third offset suits longer tiles and softer finishes, a straight stack reads modern, and a vertical stack lifts the eye. A contrasting grout makes herringbone graphic.
