Square Tiles: what to know

A square tile gives a wall a steady, even grid. Our 25 squares run from 125 mm and 132 mm to 150 mm, 200 mm and 300 mm. The 132x132 mm size is the most common, followed by 300x300 mm and 200x200 mm.

Finishes are gloss and matt. Colours include white, beige, cream, pink, blue, green, grey, black and silver. Five have an encaustic look, two have a handmade look, and some have a soft cushion edge. Where a listing states a use, it is walls.

Squares look best when the joint is steady. Run them straight, in a stacked grid, for a clean pattern. Count rows before you order: a 132 mm tile gives about 16 rows on a 2100 mm wall, and a 200 mm tile about ten (2 mm joints).

  • Joints of 1.5 mm suit rectified edges. About 3 mm suits standard tile.
  • Handmade-look squares vary in edge and tone, so mix boxes and use a relaxed joint.
  • On handmade-look tile, avoid bright white grout, which highlights every chip.
  • Dry-lay the first courses so cuts at corners are not slivers.

Encaustic-look squares work best as the feature. Use one wall or a splashback and keep the room around it plain.

To estimate boxes, measure the wall in square metres, subtract openings, and add 10% for cuts. Add 15% if the tile has handmade-look edges. Divide by the box coverage on the listing. A 3 m² wall with 15% becomes 3.45 m². At 1.0 m² a box, that is four boxes.
