Mallee Burnt Gum, up close.
Mallee Burnt Gum is a glazed rectangle in deep charcoal, 60 x 108 mm, made of porcelain 9 mm thick. Pale flecks scatter through the surface and a narrow raised rim frames each piece, so a wall of it reads as a quiet grid of small dark frames.
It belongs on a bathroom wall or a kitchen splashback. Mapei Volcano Sand keeps the grout line almost invisible, so the flecks and the raised rim do the detailing. Made in Japan, it pairs well with brass and pale oak.

Laying notes
Half offset (running bond) is the classic. A one-third offset suits longer tiles and softer finishes, a straight stack reads modern, and a vertical stack lifts the eye. A contrasting grout makes herringbone graphic.
